As a 42-year-old full-time bike mechanic, running a business and racing competitively, I understand the importance of training smart and taking care of my body. One of the most critical aspects of my training routine is regularly testing my lactate levels using a Lactate Pro meter.

What and why is measuring blood lactate important?

Lactate is a byproduct of energy production in the muscles, and it's a key factor in endurance sports such as bike racing. When I exercise, my muscles use glucose as fuel, which is broken down through a process called glycolysis. This process produces energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), but it also produces lactate as a byproduct. When lactate accumulates too quickly, it can cause fatigue and limits my performance.

To perform at my best, I need to understand my lactate threshold, which is the point at which my body starts to produce more lactate than it can clear. By measuring my lactate levels using a blood lactate meter, I can identify my lactate threshold and develop a training plan that is tailored to my specific needs.

For the 2023 season, I’m working with a Coach, who is experienced in interpreting lactate test results and is also crucial for maximizing my performance and achieving my goals. By taking care of my body and my bike, I can perform at my best and enjoy the thrill of bike racing.

Recovery and avoiding overtraining

In addition to helping me improve my performance, testing my lactate levels also helps me stay healthy and prevent overtraining. If I push myself too hard without allowing enough time for recovery, my lactate levels may remain elevated, indicating that my body needs more time to rest and repair.

Regularly testing lactate levels using a blood lactate meter is a critical aspect of my training routine as a bike racer. By understanding my lactate threshold and monitoring my progress over time, I can develop a training plan that is tailored to my needs and push myself to new levels of endurance and performance.
